Taupo Golf Club has two great 18-hole courses – It is New Zealand’s only golf club offering two 18-hole layouts at the same location. The two courses are quite different and provide an option to suit the type of golfing experience required.
One thing they do have in common, though, is breath-taking views. Our central North Island location draws visitors from far and wide just to sample the scenery on offer. Both courses offer views of Mount Tauhara, the world-famous Mount Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park are a little over an hour away.
For the avid golfer, to find 36 wonderful golf holes in such a beautiful setting is an incredible bonus and one that simply cannot be missed.
Taupo Golf Club is just “a swing away from town” - we are literally a few minutes’ drive from the centre of town. Taupo’s central location makes it a popular holiday destination.
The courses can be enjoyed 365 days a year, as they are laid out on pumice soils, so are free draining and do not get bogged down in winter or covered in snow.
The Centennial Course is a surprise to first-time visitors and certainly no pushover as a test of the game. Recent renovations and the removal of many trees have transformed this championship course into more of an ‘inland links’ style with generous fairways, penal rough and superb greens.
The course stretches to 6,369 metres off the Blue Tees and plays to a par of 72, with two par-3s and three par-5s going out and two par-3s and a single par-5 coming home. It has its own Amen Corner, holes 13 to 16, and they are the key to a good score.
The Tauhara Course is a parkland-themed course but also with a strong thermal component. Measuring 5,645 metres from the White Tees with a par of 72 (NZCR 68.5), it is a flatter, shorter, easier course perfect for (and well utilised by) veterans, female, junior players and corporate groups.
The greens, though, are considerably smaller, so to shoot a good score it’s more about accuracy with the short and mid irons and being able to get up and down consistently should you miss the green in regulation.
